Scientists have apparently dispelled the old adage which says dogs are man’s best friend since a new study has shown that pooches and girls under the age of 15 have the strongest bond.

Scottish researchers asked about 6,000 local school children, aged between 11 to 15 to take up a quiz. Three-quarters of those who took up the quiz had an animal at home. All of these people felt less lonely and happier when they owned a pet, but female students who had a dog felt a stronger attachment to their animal in comparison to their male counterparts.

In fact, girls end up making a stronger and greater bond with warm-blooded animals such as dogs and cats whereas fish, amphibians, and reptiles are more popular among the boys. In all, dogs had turned out to be the most popular pet with both genders.

Researchers told The The Sunday Post
: “Our findings have highlighted the significance of dogs as the animals with whom children bond most. Dogs have been viewed as friends. Children seem to be extremely fond of dogs may be due to their playful and friendly nature and the reciprocating nature of the relationship, be it the support, affection, and understanding the child feels they receive from the dog.”

This attachment has also had a positive impact on their wellbeing.

The researchers told- “Children who have a strong attachment with their dogs were more satisfied with their lives and had better mental health.“

The Kennel Club said that some of the best breeds for families who have children are Labrador Retrievers, Poodles, and Boxers. All of these breeds have been known to be gentle with an affectionate and patient temperament.
